About

Rimiyoho is a projection painting project by visual artist Fernando Sica‍ ‍based in México City. During his performance, Rimiyoho paints and animates in real time projecting on buildings, stages or in urban spaces, exploring ephemeral art in motion.

Rimiyoho creates animated digital artworks in front of people eyes using Tagtool for iPad, a projector and the night as a canvas, pluging the projector straight into his mind as an amplifier of imagination, freely improvising with shapes, colors and compositions over time.

His recurrent themes includes what he calls "botanical graffitis" painting organic gardens growing on the walls, as well as underwater landscapes, organic mandalas and fantastic giant creatures that temporarily live in the buildings as beings of light.

Rimiyoho has performed at music festivals, cultural events, and commercial projects, collaborating with DJs, musicians and dancers to create magical audiovisual experiences.

He has been invited to perform live across Mexico, Taiwan, China, Germany, Spain, Canada and the United States, bringing his work to spaces and festivals including the National Taichung Theater in Taiwan, MUTEK Montreal, MUTEK MX, the ZKM Center for Art and Media in Germany, the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, León Light Fest, FILUX among others.

He is always looking for new places to paint and build new collaborations.

Illustration as a live performance

Using Tagtool on the iPad, I transform empty spaces into living art through a completely manual process. My fingers control both the drawing and color simultaneously as well as the movement recording using two hands.

This allows me to adapt instantly to the rhythm of a DJ, the energy of a festival or the specific concept of a commercial launch, turning the act of illustration into an engaging, live performance that syncs seamlessly with any environment.

Pure hand drawn animation

My artistic style is rooted in pure freehand drawing. There are no plugins, pre made video loops or artificial intelligence algorithms. Every texture, pulse, and line reflects the direct movement of my hands. This raw, organic connection ensures that what the audience sees is a genuine human expression, an authentic breathing piece of art built stroke by stroke.

The Light Sorcerer

During live performances, Rimiyoho embodies a sorcerer of light, stepping out from behind the screen. Through the use of custom masks, a mysterious character is brought to life around the projection, establishing a mystical atmosphere that alters the room's energy. This performance draws people into the space, inviting them to witness the organic, live drawing process up close.

To bring this character to life, Rimiyoho collaborates closely with textile designer Itzel Gutierrez and her studio Mamífero.
The process starts with initial sketches, and experiments with fabrics, wire, foil, and hand embroidery to build each piece.

These masks connect with the visual elements and style of the illustrations, drawing inspiration from organic elements like jellyfish and colorful irises, as well as corals and the artistry of Japanese Daruma masks.

Represented in an abstract, organic way through diverse textile materials, the character ultimately comes together on stage as an enigmatic presence that casts spells of light and color, conjuring visuals that take possession of architectural spaces and environments.
